I searched the the archives and only found one reference relating specifically to the TDK model 440N multi format burner (posted by Abell44_ on 5/14). My experience with this drive is similar to his. Let me ad a few other pieces of info. Please scan past the historical info to see my questions:
<<-- History of Install -->>
I installed the DXC ver 1.3.1 and could not get anything to work. With this version DXC looks like it read the source DVD but produced the error message, ' Can't Find DVD Drive Info.' when it searched for the burner. I Reviewed the TDK support pages and downloaded and flashed the firmware with their latest version (1.06).
The result of the next burn attempt also failed (SCSI reset with error code = 02062900H I think, didn't write it all down). I downloaded DXC 1.5.2 and tried again. I am using TDK and Memorex DVD-R media (both certified for 4x). DXC can always read the source DVD and now after all the upgrades to FW and SW, DXC can detect blank DVD-R media and give me a green light to burn it. However the following messages are the result:
Drive operation was not successfull
DVD Recorder is not Ready
Cannot get disk and track info from the recorder
DVD Recorder is not Ready
Driver error code=02020408h
The Disk is not successfully recorded.
However, I can place the burned DVD in my home entertainment player and it works flawlessly, menus, everything.
I have not tried much with the DVD+R. I tried burning with the +R disk provided by TDK and it failed with a timeout about 10 minutes into the burn.
<<-- Questions -->>
Is there anything I can provide to tech support to troubleshoot these errors? LOG FILES, etc.
Is there any work being done to remedy these problems with this multi format burner? If so, is there any timeframe for delivery of a fix?
Finally, after burning several DVDs, the burner phase quit working. I had to remove and reinstall all DXC software to get it to work again. Is the download I got a trial version of DXC and not a patch? How do I get the patches/upgrades?
toolman18
jcrick,
Log files are in the 321 folder, under Program Files.Version 1.5.2 was a fix for Eposodic disks. You probably will not see to much activity with DXC as alot of the Gurus are working on getting Platinum ready.

Toolman,
From what you are saying it sounds like DXC as sold in the stores is a dead product and anyone who buys it should be sure they already have a burner that is proven to work with it because there really is no support for the product?? So it's just like I threw $100 out the window? Of course, I suppose I can throw another $100 at the platinum version in hopes that it might work!? I certainly hope that is wrong.
So should I dump my TDK drive and get a Sony 500A?
Glass
jcrick
There is still a LOT of support for DXC. As sold in the stores, it works flawlessly for the vast majority. Updates are free (which they put out every few weeks), and people on this forum are more than willing to help.
Try and never burn a movie at 4x. Very few computers (if any) can properly sustain the throughput needed to maintain the buffer at that speed. That speed is OK for data, but movies may skip or do weird things when burned at 4x.
As for your error 02020408h, do a search on it and you will find several solutions.

Glass,
I only used the 4x media to eleminate a variable, and there are many. There is no adjustment for record speed, so I assume the program either picks the slowest speed or tests the media for some integrity. I did read in the posts that version 1.4.something did have a setting for this but removed it in 1.5.2, but again I don't know the record speed.
I shut down all applications, including FW and virus scan. I also shut down some unnecessary processes to be sure nothing will steal clock cycles. My processor runs at 2GHz (and no overclocking), and with nothing else running, I should be OK. I've checked to be sure my drives are set as Master/Slave and not CSEL. However, I'm not usre about other applications that are installed that could be a problem. I removed Roxio (was mentioned on the 321 web site's FAQs). I read some references to 'DLA's' and other 'Packet Writing software/drivers' but am not sure what those might be. Can someone throw me a bone here?
Today I tried to backup Space Cowboys (sorry, it was the first thing I grabbed on the shelf) and I got all the same errors mentioned previously:
Cannot get disk and track info from the recorder
DVD Recorder is not Ready
Driver error code=02020408h
The Disk is not successfully recorded.
However, the copy will play somewhat. It will play about the first 15 chapters withno problems, but then it starts skipping sections that I would guess to be about 4-10 seconds. The scene freezes and then resumes following a small gap in the movie. I didn't try to see what the second DVD would be like.
I retried this with some 2X TDK DVDs, with the same disapointing result. If you or anyone has suggestions, I'm all ears....

Have patience, we really do just want to try and help you. I personally have gotten several dozen people up and running, and have failed probably 1 out of every 3 times.
First, follow what is going on with abell closely. 321 is working with him personally, so it would be worth watching his results. http://dvdxcopy.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/31033 They are on the last couple of pages only.
Give us a list of your computer, memory, DVD burner, CD burner, writing programs (Nero, INCD, etc), OS, and whatever else you can think of. The interactions can be boggling.
Make sure you have the latest firmware updates for your computer, including for your burner. If your have XP, make sure you have SP1 installed. If you have Windows 2000, I believe they are up to the third major update.
As a last resort, I would suggest is to write down everything that is running in the background (when you hit CTRL-ALT-DEL). I have decoded it for others and found the conflicting software before. Hopefully can for you if that is what the problem is.
As for DLA or packet writing software, check for anything that looks like that under Add/Remove programs (located in Control Panel). If you are not sure, ask before removing anything.

I had the same errors. I fixed it by reinstalling 1.5 with 1.4 and reinstalling the gear drivers using the old gear driver zip at
ftp://ftp1.dvdxcopy.com/
This allowed me to burn successfully with RW discs. Then I tried using R+ because the RW discs wouldn't read on my home DVD. Make sure master disc is clean and scratch free. Also you might want to try nero if you haven't already. I read about Intel Application Accelerator causing many problems so you might want to uninstall it(if you have it). Hope this helps.

Oh, I also meant to add that both DVD readers share the same IDE cable (Primary), the DVD writer (TDK) is the master and reader is the slave. The hard drive and Zip drive share second IDE cable (the HD is primary).

Check these programs:
InstantAccess.exe
Background program which interacts with Xerox Textbridge’s Instant Access feature app. This gets installed when you install the Xerox Textbridge OCR software. Few users use Instant Access. Worse, we have experienced this background program to often cause software installation problems.
Recommendation :
Not necessary, Instant Access works perfectly well without this background program having been pre-loaded at boot-up. Delete with Starter (where it may show as INSTAN~1.EXE).
Avconsol.exe, Mcshield.exe, vshwin.exe, VSStat.exe, GuardDog.exe, and Avsynmgr.exe are all McAfee programs. It would help if you disabled these BEFORE attempting to copy a disk. On occasion, they may interfere with the operation. Do NOT use the Internet or email without restarting your computer unless you are 100% sure you can detect viruses and stop them.
You do not appear to have DLA running on your system. If I were you, I would uninstall InstantAccess, then uninstall ALL software that is not working correctly (like DVDXCopy), then reinstall the removed programs (not including InstantAccess). Make sure your Mcafee is NOT running whenever you install new programs. It may (in some cases) cause problems.

Glass,
I haven't had a chanc in the last couple days to try this out yet. Howevr, I do recall stopping some of these apps (but not the instantaccess) using msconfig.exe. THe only problem is tat if I restart normal mode, the applications are restarted. How can I permanantly remove them from the startup? They do not appear int he startup folder.
I jsut got some +R DVDs to try also, so now when I get home I'l try both the -R and the +R media.

Use the Add/Remove programs located in your Control Panel to permanently remove some of those programs, like McAfee and Textbridge. Reinstall McAfee anti virus ONLY, not the rest. Also take a quick look in there for ANY programs that have the letters DLA in them and remove those.

I too had the same trouble with my TDK 440N. I was finally able to solve my trouble by removing ALL the software, I repeat ALL the software that came with the Tdk burner. I removed it in add/remove programs, I didn't have to get into the registry and do any thing there. To be on the safe side I also removed CloneCD and the Virtual drive that it installs. I plan to reinstall CloneCD but will do that later.
Just to make sure that we are on the same page,my trouble was as follows;
DXC 1.5.2 would only burn to +R/RW media
DXCX 2.0.1 would only burn to -R/RW media
My Toshiba sd5109 only can read -R media
My generic set top player can read all types of media but has no progressive scan nor Dolby 5.1 nor DTS.
I am now left with only 1 trouble that I haven't been able to fix. In DXCX I cant use the ASK ME option because it locks up when I am asked to select and click OK.Hope this info helps.

jcrick,
in regards to the 440n, I personally have been working with this drive, and have burned to minus and plus media reliably and LOVE this drive. unfortunately, the AOPC features on NEC based drives currently confuse Gearworks, and sometimes the API for Nero as well.
The AOPC will dynamically adjust the power output of the burning lens during the burn, helping the writer give stronger burns, better quality discs, and lets it write properly to partially flawed media.
when the AOPC is engaged, the drive will return an errorlevel (signal that the burn stopped with information returned).
Usually, the 02020408h message, when happening at the end of a burn, is actually the drive saying 'I am done! Disc Successfull! I had to use AOPC though!'
The Gearworks drivers trip on the 'AOPC' portion of the message, and assume that it is an error, and tells XCopy this. In 95% of the times I got this error at this time, my discs were GOOD, perfect even. the software just got confused.
If you combine cheaper media with a lot of programs running, the AOPC will be activated along with BurnProof. In many cases, the drive could recover, but the software only is expecting the BurnProof statement.
ex: 'I had to pause the recording, as the computer is not getting the information to me fast enough. BurnProof engaged.' This is caused by other programs keeping the computer too busy to get info to the drive. On the NEC drives, this is what happens: 'I had to pause the recording, as the computer is not getting the information to me fast enough. BurnProof engaged. AOPC Engaged to minimize damage from BurnProof.' Gear AND/OR Nero then trip on the AOPC message, and BOOM.
By eliminating background processes, your burn should be able to complete, even if it does have the 02020408h error. Watch in the log window: if you see 'Burn completed successfully' in the log window, but then see the 02020408h error, the disc should be just fine, try playing it back. you will then get the burn disc dialog again, just choose skip this disc to continue if you are doing a 2 disc burn.
Unfortunately, the many errors we are encountering have caused us to change burning engines to the VSO software from in Xpress, and we are migrating the code to this new enging. PLEASE be patient, as this is not easy!
ablindog,
To get the Ask Me feature going, make sure you have a solid ASPI layer. a good version of 4.60 is here:
ftp://ftp.321studios.com/aspi/forceaspi.exe . install, run pink icon from desktop, follow steps, reboot.
I am amazed that you were only able to burn to minus media in Xpress, as I usually use plus here! were you getting errors, or is Xpress just not picking up the blank +R/+RW?
Later...

I cleared up many problems by removing roxio but still have three issues. BTW I tried the force aspi and it locked up my 'puter, it wouldn't boot. My current layer is 4.7.1 I think is what I remember.
1. still cant burn +r/rw media using DXCX
2. still cant burn -r/rw media using DXC
3. cant use the ASK ME in DXCX. It freezes program
I am using TDK 2x and 4x -r, Fuji 2x+r, have also used Memorx 2x -r and +r and -rw.It burns very well on just about all media I have thrown at it except Princo
when I try +r in DXCX it thinks the media is cd media

312_Geek,
Did you get my last PM? While catching up on some posts, I had read on the 1.5.2 problems and solutions thread that there were some of the MODS were having problems with PM recently, so just double checking.
Quote:Unfortunately, the many errors we are encountering have caused us to change burning engines to the VSO software from in Xpress, and we are migrating the code to this new enging. PLEASE be patient, as this is not easy!
This is great news! I installed and ran Xpress a few days ago and the VSO burn engine works great with the NEC. The only problems I had were specific to my original disk during the read phase, 'Cannot read title set' error.
Do you have a ballpark ETA for the migration? Not trying to put you on the spot, just a rough estimate.
I have a couple of other questions regarding the NEC and my config. If you could PM me when you get a chance, that would be great.
Thanks!
