Joseph Manton Serial Numbers

The gun also has 2 serial numbers, leading me to believe that it was a recent import by Century or Sarco. The shape of the receiver is the same as MPR993's gun. Posted By: jeweler Re: J. Manton Shotgun - 08/12/13 12:53 AM. Joseph Manton, London. Exceptionally Rare 16-bore flintlock double-barreled rifle #1514, ca. This magnificent firearm, appearing in Neal’s Manton books as a percussion conversion, has recently completed an exhaustive, one year, 2000 man-hour, re-conversion to flintlock by Master Gun-Maker, Steven Alexander.

Although platinum was also used by other gunmakers, the evidence provided by the serial numbers of their guns reinforces the belief that one of the Manton brothers was the first to do so. Joseph apparently changed to platinum touch-holes in 1804–5 while John changed in 1803 ( 20 ). SOLD FOR: $1,825.00 LSB#: 190402LH51 Make: Joseph Manton Model: Double Rifle Serial Number: We suspect that the rifle was not originally serialized, but “WR31011” has been marked on the bottom of each barrel. Year of Manufacture: Ca. 1820s Caliber: 25 Gauge (.585″) Action Type: Side-by-Side Muzzle-Loading Percussion Double Rifle With Safeties Markings: The top of the barrel rib is marked.

Sir Richard Sutton also owned Lyndford Hall in Norfolk, a residence only about 12 Miles from Swaffham. It is possible the breech-ends were renewed 'in emergency' by William Parson, being the nearest available gunmaker at the time
