The 9.2(3) firmware image within the installation
Changing the firmware is a relatively easy task. It involves having a tftp server on the network that serves the firmware files to the phone upon bootup. After registering for a free account on the Cisco website, I was able to download the SIP9-3-1-1S firmware files and followed the instructions at this link to upgrade 7911 phones to SIP firmware. The Cisco Unified IP Phone Model 7911G and 7906G Firmware version 9.2 (3) is also supplied in a zip file, as an alternative in case a Cisco Unified CallManager is not available to run the executable installer program. The name of this file is cmterm-79117906-sccp.9-2-3.zip. SCCP & SIP Firmware download for the Cisco 7906 & 7911 IP phone. Before beginning, the Cisco phone must have the SIP firmware installed. Proof of this is the SIP logo in the upper right corner of the phone's screen. Cisco has the SIP phone image available to the public at ftp.cisco.com. Also make sure your device firmware version is 8.2 or better. EDIT 4/12/20 @ 10:10 PM EST: I was a dummy haha, you have to load the xml WITH the config AFTER you flash it. DuhI can't provision the phone because the butt.

Image Authentication Support

Cisco providesimage authentication with its various IP phone protocols. Imageauthentication allows the phone to detect if the image has been tampered withbefore it is programmed into the phone. If the image fails the authenticationprocess then the phone will reject the image. Image authentication occursthrough signed files. All Cisco Unified IP Phone
The 9.2(3)firmware uses signed (authenticated) files. This step improves IP phonesecurity on the Cisco Unified IP Phone 7911Gand 7906G.
Installing the Firmware Load
Before using the CiscoUnified IP Phone 7911G and 7906Gwith Cisco Unified CallManager release 3.3 or later,you must install the latest firmware on all Cisco Unified CallManagerservers in the cluster.
Note: If youhave a Cisco Unified CallManager on Release 3.0, 3.1,or 3.2, do NOT install this firmware. You must firstupgrade your Cisco Unified CallManager to thecompatible releases listed in Table 1 or Table2.

The 8.0(1)firmware release has been made available on Cisco Unified CallManagerinstallation CDs; however, it will not be made available on Cisco.com due toadditional bugs filed during final testing. Cisco recommends that you insteaduse the updated 9.2(3) firmware load, which is now available on Cisco.com. Thisrecommendation is limited to this specific firmware release and has no bearingon any other software or firmware available on Cisco Unified

For Cisco Unified CallManager5.0, you must do all software installations and upgrades by using the SoftwareUpgrades menu options. The system can upload and process only software thatCisco approved. You cannot install or use third-party or Windows-basedsoftware applications that you may have been using with a previous version ofCisco Unified CallManager with Cisco Unified
- Using your web browser, login to the Cisco IPT Platform Administration web page
- Under the Software Upgrades menu, select Install/Upgrade.
- Fill in the appropriate values in the Software Location section for the file you downloaded above, and click Next.
- In the Available Software drop-down box, select the file you downloaded above, and click Next.
- Enusre that the downloaded file has the same MD5 hash value as listed in Table 3.
- Click Next.
- In the Warning box, verify you have selected the correct firmware, then click Install.
- Ensure that you received a Success message.
When Using Cisco Unified CallManagerearlier than Release 5.0
- Login to the console of the Cisco Unified CallManager Server where you downloaded the installer.
- Note the location where you saved the downloaded file.
- Double-click the file to start the installation.
- In the Welcome window, click Next.
- In the License Agreement window, click Yes.
- If a Read Only File Detected window pops up, click Yes.
- After the installation finishes, click OK.
- Reset all corresponding devices.
Cisco Unified IP Phone Model 7911Gand 7906G Alternate Firmware format
The Cisco Unified IP Phone Model 7911Gand 7906G Firmware version 9.2(3) is also supplied ina zip file, as an alternative in case a Cisco Unified CallManageris not available to run the executable installer program. The name of this fileis cmterm-7911_7906-sccp.9-2-3.zip.
After unzipping the firmware files, they should be manuallycopied to the appropriate directory on the TFTPserver.

Recently I purchased a cheap Cisco 7911 phone off of Ebay. Now, we all know that Cisco doesn’t care about end users, and relies on product quality through their channel partners. If you didn’t buy it from a partner, then tough luck.
In this case, Ebay isn’t a partner, so I had to rely on a friend to download the latest SIP compliant firmware for the 7911 for me. The phone, as I had it, was configured to use Cisco’s SCCP ‘Skinny’ protocol, and talk to a CallManager server. I had other plans. A friend downloaded cmterm-7911_7906-sip.8-4-2.cop for me, which I promptly renamed to cmterm-7911_7906-sip.8-4-2.tar.gz. This allowed it to be ungzipped and untarred into a working directory called 7911.
Now, I already have a working tftp server on my network. I use it for all sorts of netbooting magic. For that reason, I’m not going to cover how to set up tftp, as that’s covered a million times over elsewhere on the internet.
The main task here, is to get the 7911 to load the term06.default.loads file from the tftp server. It would be nice if the 7911 would listen to the filename parameter that can be passed from DHCP, but sadly it seems to only be interested in term06.default.loads at the base of the tftp directory. I tried everything, from matching the hardware substring in dhcpd.conf, to symlinking the mac address to the right file. Ultimately, to keep everything tidy, I put the 7911 directory into my tftp boot directory, and ran the following command.

This runs through the contents of the 7911 directory, and symlinks them to the base tftp directory. Now, reset the phone with the following procedure.
With the phone turned off, press and hold # while inserting power, either via PoE or mains adaptor. In a second or so, the line buttons start flashing amber. Release # and dial 123456789*0# and then wait. Now is a good time to be running tail -f /var/log/syslog on your tftp server. All being well, you will see logs similar to that below. If this doesn’t work, or nothing appears on the phone display, wait 5 minutes and then try the procedure again, but use 3491672850*# instead.

Once it has finished the last file, give the phone a couple of minutes to install and reboot. After a successful reboot, it should be display a Cisco screen with the words ‘Unprovisioned’ at the bottom left. If you continue to watch syslog, you will see that it requests XMLDefault.cnf.xml, CTLSEP001E4AF3D34A.tlv and SEP001E4AF3D34A.cnf.xml on a regular basis. These files handle the provisioning of the phone, from defaults to individual per-phone settings. Further information on the contents of such a file can be found over here. Once you’ve written the required file, save it into the working directory and symlink it to the tftproot as before.
Cisco 7911 Sip Firmware Update Asterisk
You can then either wait for the phone to download the new file, or reboot the phone. Every time the phone boots, it will request term06.default.loads, as that informs it about the available firmware versions. If there are no changes, it will boot as normal.
